Obituary

Jacqueline Gene Calloway, daughter of the late Oscar Calloway, Sr., and Francis Greene Calloway. Born April 19, 1944, in Griffin, Georgia, Jacqueline was the youngest of four children.

Jaqueline was educated in the Griffin-Spalding County school System and proudly graduated as a member of the Fairmont High School Class of 1962. She remained an active alumni member until her health prevented her from attending in person. Jacqueline continued her

education at Savannah State College, where she deepened her knowledge Beloved by many for her caring heart, wisdom and her direct approach, Jacqueline was known as Aunt Jack or simply Jack.

She never met a stranger. When she visited her niece, Lisa, in Cleveland she was like a celebrity was in town. Everyone wanted to hang out with "Aunt Jack".

At the early age of ten, Jack gave her life to the Lord and served Him faithfully throughout her life as a devoted member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Her commitment was evident through her active participation in the East Ward Ministry, the United Sisterhood Ministry, and the Voices of Zion Choir, later renamed the Cleopatrick Lacy Ensemble and the OPALS Ministry (Older People Are Lovingly Sweet). Jack's passion for service shone brightly through her leadership of the Food Ministry/Hospitality Committee, where she ensured that the church family and community were well-fed during revivals, funerals, and other special events. One of her final acts of dedication was working diligently on the committee for the retirement celebration for Reverend Dr. Cleopatrick Lacy.

Jack always had a heart for children and was deeply dedicated to children whose life she touched. In the early 1970s, she worked with the Pike County School System before transitioning to co-direct, Playland Day Care in Griffin, Georgia, alongside Barbara Krump. Jack also co-ran the Sunburst Enrichment Camp after school program with her lifelong friend, Lutricia Fergerson. Her career in education continued at Griffin Spalding County School System. She served at Anne Street Elementary and later Griffin High School (GHS), where she worked with her dear friend Lynda Sission, teaching children with special needs until her retirement. Her dedication spilled outside of the classroom she worked tirelessly with Special Olympics, and she was very passionate advisor to the Bogarsettes at GHS.

She received her tremendous culinary and hospitality passion from her parents which is why the kitchen was always her happy place. Jack was known near and far for her culinary skills and her a few of her staple dishes such as her peach cobbler, fried corn, dressing, and many more.

Jack's love and service extended beyond her professional life. She ensured she communicated with her family on a regular basis. If you know Jack, you know two things she loved. That was to cook and talk. She would spend hours reminiscing and laughing with her cousins. Jack had a very special relationship with her niece Lisa who she would visit in Cleveland Ohio. Jack was a proud and active member of the Fairmont High School class of 1962 and the Fairmont Alumni Association, cherishing opportunities to reunite and celebrate with her classmates. As a member of the Junior Variety Garden Club and the Griffin Senior Center, she enjoyed fellowship and created countless cherished memories. Jackie also treasured her daily outings to McDonald's with her lifelong friends, moments filled with laughter and companionship.

Her niece, Lisa, named the group of ladies the Flossy Posse.

Jack's life was enriched by her lifelong friends, Brenda Hines, Lutricia Fergerson, Margaret Bentley, and Portia Lacy (Cleopatrick). William and Ondrea Cobb, who supported her faithfully during her illness.

Jack's was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Sr. and Frances Calloway; sisters, Annette Barrow and Freda Glover; and nephew, Marvin "Keith" Barrow.
